100 Years of .35 Whelen
Monday, January 17, 2022
"Only accurate rifles are interesting." That quote from Col. Townsend Whelen is also a philosophy that helped influence the 1922 development of the cartridge that bears his name. Basically, it's a .30-06 Springfield case necked up to hold a .358 caliber bullet. Paired with today's prize, a rifle renowned for outstanding accuracy, the .35 Whelen is an awesome—and bullseye interesting—hunting round.

California Gold Rush
Monday, January 24, 2022
On this date in 1848, prospectors struck gold in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains. The news ignited a mass migration of 300,000 fortune-seekers into a region only sparsely occupied. Hungry 49ers relied on market hunters for food. Waterfowl, deer, elk, even bear, fell fast. The monstrous relic for today's drawing comes from an era when profiteers killed dozens of ducks or geese with each shot.

As RMEF draws today's winner, China is hosting an athletic event combining cross-country skiing with rifle shooting. The Winter Biathlon, part of the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, rewards those who can go fast up, down and over terrain, yet quickly slow their breathing and heart rate enough to make a perfect shot (sounds like elk hunting, right?). Precision Anschutz rifles are the gold standard in this sport.

Valentine's Day

In classic mythology, Cupid is the god of attraction, romance and love. Often portrayed as a chubby boy with wings, he flits from place to place dispensing his spells via bow and arrow. Gun-Day Monday would find it all way more realistic if Cupid carried pistols instead. After all, nothing says romance like his-and-hers matching Kimbers. If you're today's winner, get ready for love at first sight. No Cupid required.

Presidents' Day
Monday, February 21, 2022
Feeding bears was once a major attraction at Yellowstone National Park. Each evening, lodge employees dumped garbage while tourists delighted at bears foraging and fighting for table scraps. In 1936, Gerald R. Ford, 22, worked as a park ranger with a .30-06 in case bruins got too close. Today, Yellowstone bear policies are drastically different. Today's prize is drastically different, too, from Ford's old park rifle.

TR's Famous Bear Hunt
Monday, March 7, 2022
One of the great American hunting stories is the famous saga of President Theodore Roosevelt's 1902 bear hunt in Mississippi. It captured imaginations, shaped new sporting ethics and, of course, inspired a toy that toddlers cuddle still today.
But there's part of the story that most folks never knew!
Roosevelt was guided by Holt Collier, a former slave with hundreds of delta swamp bruins to his credit. His hounds soon struck a track. For hours they pushed a big bear toward a clearing where the president waited, rifle ready. Just past noon, the bear appeared, but Roosevelt had returned to camp for lunch.
Collier was annoyed—until the bear stopped and seized a hound. Now furious, Collier jumped into the fracas. The bruin released the lifeless dog and stood to face the guide. Collier clubbed it across the head with his rifle, bending the barrel. He tied the dazed bear to a tree and sent a rider to fetch the president.
Roosevelt was in awe of Collier's feat but declared that he would not shoot a tied-up animal.
National media had a field day. The Washington Post even ran a front-page cartoon depicting Roosevelt refusing to shoot a leashed cub. A toy designer saw the image and invented the "Teddy Bear."
The lesser-known epilogue: After the hunt, the president declared Collier "the best guide and hunter I've ever seen." He then presented Collier with a new rifle like the one Roosevelt had carried on their hunt-a Winchester Model 1886.

Paul Revere's Ride
Monday, April 18, 2022
The British are coming! Paul Revere's daring midnight ride to warn Lexington and Concord of imminent attack happened on this night in 1775. As he left Boston on horseback, two lanterns glowed in the Old North Church belfry, indicating Brits were crossing the river into Cambridge, rather than marching in from Boston Neck. Today's rifle shares a name with tonight's famous patriot of the American Revolution.

RMEF's First Project
Monday, April 25, 2022
What does RMEF have in common with today's prize? Both born in Montana! In 1984, four Montanans launched an outfit to help elk and elk hunters. By the following spring, they'd raised enough funding for RMEF's first conservation project—a small prescribed burn to enhance elk forage on nearby public land. By 2021, RMEF had helped protect or manage over 8.1 million acres, nationwide, wherever elk roam.

Civil War Ends
Monday, May 9, 2022
On this day in 1865, the Civil War was declared officially over. Federal attentions would soon pivot to America's westward expansion. Master armorer Erskine Allin designed a way to convert salvaged 1864 Springfield muskets into centerfire rifles for western forces. Re-issued as the Model 1866, these rifles were so popular, even Buffalo Bill Cody chose one over the big Sharps and Henrys for open-country use.

D-Day Remembrance
Monday, June 6, 2022
Looking back, the Allied landings at Normandy clearly marked the beginning of the end of World War II. But on June 6, 1944, that outcome must have seemed uncertain. None of the operation's goals were achieved that day, 4,400 soldiers were killed in action plus 6,000 more wounded, captured or missing. In honor of all who served, RMEF presents a distinguished rifle formally adorned in polished black finery.

'Jaws' Released
Monday, June 20, 2022
Today is the anniversary of "Jaws," the 1975 blockbuster that's still keeping beachgoers firmly ashore 47 years later. In the climactic scene, Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) is alone, clinging to a sinking boat, shooting at the oncoming shark, which is chomping a pressurized SCUBA tank. A bullet finally hits the tank. Shark explodes. For Gun-Day Monday, the best part was identifying the rifle as an M1 Garand.

Old West Saloons
Monday, July 19, 2022
In 1822—a full two centuries ago—the first saloon opened in Brown's Hole, Wyo. A new industry was born. More than just drinking establishments, saloons also offered entertainment ranging from casinos to brothels and opium dens. Some also featured indoor parlor shooting. Low-power rifles, often from Germany, used caps to fire pellets. Patrons enjoyed marksmanship wagers as they quenched their thirst.

Monte Carlo Stocks
Monday, July 25, 2022
Say "Monte Carlo" and some guys think "Chevy." A 1971 SS 454, perhaps, blue with Landau roof, and a suntan girl riding shotgun. Today's prize unburdens us from such useless fluff. Monte Carlo is actually a style of gunstock. In 1890s Monaco, at a ritzy Monte Carlo resort, shotgun course instructors devised a new raised-comb stock that helped some guests more quickly align gun with shoulder, cheek and eye.

Something Old, Something New
Monday, August 22, 2022
Today's winner gets two Winchester shotguns—manufactured 127 years apart—with a total prize value of $3,589.98!
Back in 1893
John Browning patented the design and sold it to Winchester, and in 1893 the world's first commercially successful pump shotgun, the Model 1893, appeared in stores at the ghastly price of $25.
Bird hunters quickly cottoned to the fast, slide action but the gun had its limitations. It came in 12 gauge only. A 2-5/8" chamber only. Full-choke barrel only. Above all, it was made for blackpowder shotshells only—the fatal flaw that doomed the '93 to a short run in the marketplace. Soon after its launch, new smokeless shells came out. Hotter powders and higher pressures were too much for a scattergun caught between two different technological eras.
Winchester would later issue a product recall, of sorts, by offering to replace all 1893s with brand new and improved—and absolutely free—Model 1897s. All returned '93s were destroyed. Historians say that's partly why the "old" half of today's prize is so scarce and sought-after by collectors.
Here's your chance to own a rare piece of firearms history. Like other American inventions that went quickly from innovation to obsolescence, this old wallhanger has an interesting tale to tell.
Back for 2021
Aficionados of modern Winchester shotguns know well the Model 101. The smooth-handling legend was introduced in 1963. Over the years, from time to time, the company has released limited runs of deluxe field editions with fine maple stocks. This is one of those special makes!

Monday, October 17, 2022
The Texas Rangers formed on this day in 1835. Their reputation for badassery quickly grew. Tough, fearless and skilled, Mexican bandits called them Los Diablos Tejanos-the Texan Devils. In a flash of marketing savvy, Colt engraved a Rangers action scene on its 1847 dragoons. As the cylinder revolves, it reveals a Rangers skirmish with Comanche warriors. Buyers loved it. RMEF's creepy friends at Baron Engraving and Mossberg created this one-of-a-kind gun for today's spooky but fun prize. Trick or treat!

Cyber Monday
Monday, November 28, 2022
Calamity Jane was, shall we say, saucy.
She cussed and gambled, chewed tobacco and swilled whiskey. She had the unusual habit of dressing like a man. She was, at different times, a prostitute and an Army scout. She could handle a bronc. And she could handle herself in lawless frontier towns. A bartender once warned a lusty cowboy that to mess with Martha Jane Cannary was to invite calamity, and her nickname was forever coined.
But Calamity Jane is perhaps best remembered for her skills as a sharpshooter.
In 1865, her family traveled in a wagon train from Missouri to Montana. Though just 13, she spent the entire trip alongside the men hunting for food. Five years later, she was an Army scout, and would go on to serve with Gen. George Armstrong Custer and others. She toured south to Arizona, west to the coast, then north and across into Idaho, building her reputation as both daring rider and deadeye shot.
In the 1890s, Calamity Jane joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, performing trick shots from horseback and bringing the rip-roaring American West to easterly audiences.
She died in 1903 at just 51 and was buried next to Wild Bill Hickok in Deadwood, S.D.
Cyber Monday is a day for showcasing modern commerce and technology, but Gun-Day Monday is choosing instead to celebrate a colorful part of America's past. Today's winner receives a Calamity Jane favorite—a Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle. That's her in the photo, holding one just like today's prize.

Lewis and Clark Ate Elk
Monday, December 5, 2022
Winter was coming fast when the Corps of Discovery reached the Pacific in 1805. In selecting a location for their encampment, no factor weighed more heavily than the good elk hunting the men found near the mouth of the Columbia River. By spring, the party had killed and consumed 131 elk—each man ate four pounds of elk meat per day! During the entire 28-month expedition, the corps consumed 375 elk.

Thomas Crapper
Monday, December 12, 2022
English inventor Thomas Crapper in the 1800s received a patent for the floating ballcock, a device that controls water flow from toilet tank to bowl. It's also used in guzzlers that collect and dispense drinking water to elk in arid landscapes. RMEF so far has completed over 700 guzzlers and other wildlife watering projects. Today we honor British innovation by giving away another of their big ideas—the .416 Rigby.

Christmas Holiday
Monday, December 26, 2022
A long, narrow box lay under the tree, neatly wrapped, with your name on it. The gift tantalized you for two days. When no one was looking, you gave it a shake. Hefty. Probably not a baseball bat; clearly not socks. Could it be ... your first real gun? On Christmas morning, way before dawn, that wish came true. Today you get to shoot it for the first time. Welcome, young hunter, to a lifetime of great memories!
